The Brotherhood’s fanatical leader, Father Mathias, believes that the storms in the Dragon’s Triangle are the work of Yamatai’s mythical Sun Queen Himiko, who legend says was so powerful she could control the weather.
The Solarii serve as the primary enemies throughout most of the game, but there’s also a deeper mystery at work on the island of Yamatai that Lara must solve before she and her friends can escape. It’s not long before their ship, the ironically named Endurance, is overcome by the powerful storms, and Lara is washed ashore, separated from the rest of the crew, and taken captive.Īfter a harrowing escape, Lara must explore the island and find the rest of the Endurance crew, many of whom have been scattered around the island or taken captive by the island’s inhabitants, the violent Solarii Brotherhood. Lara’s expedition is in search of the legendary Kingdom of Yamatai, and despite the objections of the lead archaeologist, Dr Whitman, Lara convinces the rest of her team to sail into the Dragon’s Triangle, an area of intense and unexplained storms somewhere southeast of Japan. Over the course of nearly a dozen sequels and spinoffs over the next 15 years, we did get glimpses into Lara’s past, but in 2013, developer Crystal Dynamics decided it was high time for the world to see how Lara got her start, rebooting the storyline with her first expedition as a full-fledged archaeologist. However, when the first Tomb Raider game from developer Core Design launched on PC, PlayStation, and Sega Saturn back in 1996, the character of Lara Croft was already portrayed as a world-renowned adventurer and explorer, featured on magazine covers and recruited by high-powered businesspeople looking for ancient artifacts. Tomb Raider is one of the most iconic series in video game history, of course, with Lara Croft ranking right alongside certain blue hedgehogs and Italian plumbers in the pantheon of all-time most-recognized characters.
